The history of the AfricanCup of Nationsbegan in the year 1957 when the African Nations Cup officially startedon the 10th of February in the national stadium of Khartoum. Among theparticipants, there were only three countris: Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopiabecause South Africa was banned after refusing to send a mixed team toparticipate in the competition. Egypt became the first Africanchampion.
The forthcoming African Cup of Nations 2008will be its 26th edition and it will be hosted by Ghana.
The tournament will be held between January20 and February 10, 2008. 12 group winners and the best threerunners-up from groups with four teams (groups 2-11) will qualify forthe finals. Qualifiying for the African Cup of Nations 2008 takes placebetween September 2, 2006 to September 8, 2007.
Throughout the history of the Nations Cup,three different trophies have been awarded to the winners. The firstone, made of silver, was the "Abdelaziz Abdallah SalemTrophy", and itwas awarded to Ghana in 1978.The second trophy was awarded from 1980 to 2000, and it was named "Trophyof African Unity"or "African Unity Cup". It was given bytheSupreme Council for Sports in Africa to the CAF prior to the 1980tournament and it was a cylindrical piece with the Olympic rings over amap of the continent engraved on it. In 2001, the third trophy wasrevealed which represented a gold-plated cup designed and made inItaly. Cameroon, permanent holders of the previous trophy, were thefirst nation to be awarded the new trophy after they won the 2002edition.
