About
The Gulf Cup tournament
The
Gulf Cup tournament started in
the 1970s with the participation of only
four teams: Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain. However, in the
previous tournament in 2004 in Qatar the participating teams increased
to eight teams with the second participation of Yemen and the return of
Iraq after 14 years of absence.
The
previous tournament which was held in Qatar two years ago saw a change
in the tournament format which was previously used as the eight
participating teams in the tournament were drawn into two groups of
four teams each and the top two teams of each group advanced to the
semi-finals where the winners qualified to the final match.
In
the 18th Gulf Cup, the eight
participating teams will be split into two
groups as the tournament hosts UAE will be at the top of group A while
the reigning champions Qatar will top group B.
Group
A matches will be held at Al Jazeera's Mohammed bin Zayed stadium while
the matches of group B will be played at Al Nhayan stadium of Al Wahda
club.
