Pakistan Election: Musharraf’s re-election will be
a great tragedy: RAWALPINDI:
The Constitution prevents the current assemblies from
electing a new president and it will be a great tragedy
if the current legislature re-elects President
General Pervez Musharraf, said Justice (r) Wajeehuddin
Ahmad, the lawyers’ nominee for the presidential
election.
“By
electing the new president, the current assemblies will
usurp the right of the next assemblies. And from then
on, it’ll be a custom that the outgoing assemblies
choose their own president. I urge the lawyers, civil
society, journalists and people to stop General
Musharraf from becoming president for another
five years, and if this doesn’t happen, it’ll
be a catastrophe,” he told a gathering of the Lahore
High Court and the Rawalpindi Bench’s Bar Association
at the district courts on Wednesday.
The
lawyers’ presidential candidate was taken to the
district courts in a procession from the airport after
his arrival from Karachi. Hundreds of lawyers belonging
to Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Jhelum, Chakwal and Attock bar
associations welcomed him at Kutcheri Chowk.
Wajeeh
told the gathering that if the parliamentarians wanted
to change the country’s fate, then they should vote
out General Musharraf.
APDM
praised: He praised the All Parties Democratic
Movement’s (APDM) members of the National Assembly
(MNA)s and the members of the Provincial Assemblies (MPA)s
for quitting the assemblies against Musharraf’s
re-election and said their resignations had dented the
credibility and legitimacy of the October 6 presidential
election.
He
described the Supreme Court’s September 28 verdict
on Musharraf’s dual office as unexpected. He said
unlike the past, the SC had failed to form a full court
to hear the important national issue. “It’s
a constitutional requirement to form a full bench of the
Supreme Court on important issues,” he said.
He
accused Musharraf of using billions of rupees from the
national kitty for his election campaign.
Supreme
Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Munir A
Malik, on the occasion, said that the lawyers’
struggle was not limited to the restoration of Chief Justice
Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry but it was also for the freedom
of the judiciary. He said the struggle would continue
until it achieved its targets. Lahore High Court Rawalpindi
Bench Bar Association President Sardar Asmatullah said
the US didn’t want to see Pakistan a democracy as
envisioned by its founding fathers.
Pakistan
belongs to its people: Former vice chairman of the Pakistan
Bar Council Advocate Ali Ahmed Kurd said Pakistan was
not the property of an individual or a group, but it belonged
to 160 million Pakistanis. He said the lawyers would defeat
the army general on every front and in every battle.
He
praised the role of journalists and lawyers of the twin
cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad in the current movement,
Online reported. Although the current situation is not
encouraging, lawyers remain optimistic, he added.
Presidential
debates: Wajeehuddin said that the presidential
candidates should be provided an opportunity to address
the National Assembly or a debate should be held among
them. He said the lawyer’s community is united from
Karachi to Khyber, adding that 160 million citizens of
the country are supporting them.
“We
have lodged our first complaint before the chief election
commission (CEC). The CEC cannot make amendments in the
Constitution without the will of the president,”he
said.
The
‘dictator’ has been deceiving the nation for
the last eight years, he said.
The
lawyers showed slogans of “Go Musharraf Go”
and passed a resolution declaring they would continue
their struggle until the restoration of ‘genuine’
democracy.
ISI
former head General (r) Hamid Gul, his daughter Uzma Gul
who is a renowned legal expert of Al-jihad trust Habib
Wahab-ul-Khair, incumbent and former office bearers of
high court Bar and bars of various districts of the NWFP
were present.
