2007 Pakistan Election: Hundreds hold rally outside SC against Musharraf:

By SALMAN MASOOD

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Sept. 20 —The president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, will try to win another five-year term in an election on Oct. 6, the country’s election commission announced Thursday.

The election schedule comes at a time of immense political and legal wrangling as General Musharraf, 64, faces several petitions in the Supreme Court. His opponents are challenging his eligibility to run and his dual role as civilian and military leader.

A nine-member panel of judges started hearing the petitions on Monday, and a decision is expected next Wednesday, according to lawyers. General Musharraf, who took power in 1999, has told the Supreme Court that he will step down as the army chief if he is re-elected and will take the oath as a civilian president.

ISLAMABAD ( 2007-09-21 12:07:29 )

Hundreds of people chanting ‘Al-Jihad’ protested outside the Supreme Court (SC) on Friday against President Pervez Musharraf's plan to be re-elected in uniform.

Around 800 members of opposition parties, waving green and white flags and banners with anti-government slogans, called on General Pervez Musharraf to step down.

Several dozen supporters of Threek–e-Insaf held a separate protest outside the court, a day after the election commission (EC) set October 6 as the date for the presidential election.

Authorities imposed tight security for the protest, deploying about 200 riot police carrying baton and shields, and backed by armoured police vehicles and a contingent of elite police commandos.

The members of opposition parties along with Imran Khan chairman Threek–e-Insaf have filed legal petitions in the Supreme Court challenging President Musharraf's dual military-civilian role and his eligibility to stand in elections.

The court is expected to rule early next week.

President Musharraf said earlier this week that he will step down as army chief if he is re-elected and before he is sworn in for a new term. His current term expires on November 15.
